Dr. Heather Jones, DOM, Dipl. OM: Along with being the owner of Balance & Wellness, LLC, Heather Jones is a Doctor of Oriental Medicine (DOM), and a Microlight Therapy Specialist. She received her Master of Science in Oriental Medicine from Southwest Acupuncture College in Albuquerque, New Mexico. In addition to her licensure to practice Oriental Medicine within the state of New Mexico, Dr. Jones is a nationally certified Diplomat of Oriental Medicine (Dipl. OM). She has advanced training in formulating custom herbal remedies as well as in microlight therapy; this includes intensive training under some of the country's leaders in the use of microcurrent combined with the ancient principles of Oriental Medicine. Dr. Jones also completed an advanced internship at Heilongzhong University Hospital, in Harbin, China; one of northeast China's leading Traditional Chinese Medical hospitals. Dr. Heather Jones is very passionate about teaching her patients to use the ancient principles of Oriental Medicine in new ways to heal themselves, their families, and to show how we all can take control of our own health and healthcare. Services What does a typical treatment at Balance & Wellness involve? All treatments provided by Dr. Heather Jones include several of the following modalities listed below. While Dr. Jones believes in being very gentle with the body, she also feels very strongly that using multiple modalities or methods with each of her patients is essential to achieve optimal healing results. Treatment sessions start at $75-$80 plus tax. This includes individual examination and diagnosis at each treatment, multiple modalities, and any take home information and/or exercises beneficial to each patient. Acupuncture Acupuncture: Acupuncture is a very effective form of health care that has evolved into a complete and holistic medical system over the last 2,500 years. Practitioners of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine have used this noninvasive medical system to diagnose and help millions of people get well and stay healthy all over the world. During an Acupuncture treatment, Dr. Heather Jones will place fine, sterile needles at specific acupoints on the body. This activates the bodys Qi (pronounced chee) and promotes natural healing by enhancing recuperative power, immunity, and physical and emotional health. It can also improve overall function and well-being. It is a safe, painless and effective way to treat a wide variety of medical problems.Often, Dr. Jones will incorporate a non-needle form of acupuncture in her treatments using the wands of a microcurrent machine that also emit different shades of colored light (Microlight Therapy). As a modern Doctor of Oriental Medicine, Dr. Jones is familiar with most of the 1,800 herbs in the Chinese pharmacopeia, as well as many of the herbs that have been used in Western cultures for centuries. Nutrition is discussed with most of her patients, and Dr. Jones often provides a list of foods that are most beneficial to each patient's individual needs. Food is medicine!

Cupping Cupping: Cupping is an ancient therapeutic modality designed to stimulate the flow of Qi and Blood within the superficial muscle layers. It is used for sore muscles, tension, neck pain, back pain, and even the common cold. In this modality, Dr. Heather Jones will place small sterile glass cups over specific areas on your body. A vacuum is created under the cup using heat or suction. The cups may be moved over the affected area or left in place for several minutes. You may leave the office looking like a big octopus gave you a good hug, but there is no need to worry. The slight redness will disappear quickly.

Tui Na Tui Na: Tui Na translates as "push grasp" and is a Chinese medical massage technique that moves Qi in various parts of the body. It is used to relieve muscle pain, tension, and inflammation, and is used to heal injuries. It is also very effective in the treatment of small children.

Gua Sha Gua Sha: Gua Sha is another modality used to release muscle tension, tightness, and constriction. A specialized tool, such as animal horn, jade, or ceramic, is used to gently rub or scrape the skin over a trouble area. Gua Sha feels a bit like deep massage, and is very effective. This too may leave some slight redness that will quickly dissipate.

Moxibustion Moxibustion: Moxibustion (or Moxa) is a treatment that uses an herb called mugwart. It may be burned on the handle of the needle, above the skin, on salt or on a slice of ginger. This ancient modality is used to warm acupuncture points or areas of the body in order to quicken the healing process. It is very soothing and relaxing, as well as effective in treating a variety of medical conditions.

Herbs are not covered at this point by any insurance plan in New Mexico, and neither are any cosmetic treatments.
